From the Principal – Term 1, Week 2

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,

Prayer for the Beginning of the School Year

Lord Jesus, we ask for Your help as we begin this new school year.
Allow us to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before us.
Open our eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open our heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give us a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with our studies and courage to accept new opportunities.
Help us to be attentive to one another and let us experience Your presence in our new friends.

Jesus, inspire us to do our best this year!

Amen

Welcome back for the start of the 2026 school year! It was a privilege to see our students and families return refreshed and eager after the holidays. The interactions between old friends and new were very positive as all went about finding their new classrooms. What is characteristic of our school and pleasing to witness, is the way that new students, families, and staff are welcomed and made feel comfortable by our existing students, families and staff and the way that all go out of their way to say hello and take the time to help others. This is noticeable in the school grounds and in the classrooms. Congratulations to all and wishing you a fantastic and successful year ahead.

As we begin the year, there are two ways to ensure that our children have the greatest opportunity of experiencing success. One of these is a strong partnership between home and school. If each child understands and witnesses that the home and school are on the same team and are committed to their growth and development, they will be more positive about their learning and more likely to succeed. Secondly, if we each have high expectations of our children, they are more accountable to the home and school and they raise their standards to meet what is being asked of them. This applies to attention to tasks, homework, uniform and presentation, respect towards others and the way they represent themselves, their families and their school.

Thank you to the many parents who attend Wednesday’s evening Parent Teacher Information Sessions. This was a great way to find out about the year ahead, show your child that you believe their learning is important and it was an opportunity to meet your child’s teachers. A HUGE thank you to the teachers who presented and their class information, awesome job!

Congratulations to all our Mums and Dads on getting their children ready for the start of the year. I appreciate it can be very hectic trying to organise all the things necessary for the new school year. Well Done! Thank you also for making a real effort with the School Uniform, as this is most important, particularly as we try and set the standard and expectation for the beginning of the year.

New Staff and Families: In a special way, I would like to welcome all those who are new to the family of Christ the King School.  My prayer and hope for you is that your association with the school will be long and lasting, and one filled with many memorable memories. May your settling in be a gentle one.

Having a Smoking Ceremony is to cleanse a space in which the ceremony takes place, so as to allow peace and recognise the importance of the occasion. We can learn about the ways that we deeply feel and care for our land – our relationship to the land. Thank you to Jonathon Garlett a proud Noongar man and his son who led our Smoking Ceremony last Friday morning.

Don’t Forget: Our fortnightly newsletter has very important information for our parents. Every class communicates via Seesaw. Our school webpage will be undergoing some changes soon.

Evening on the Green Welcome Back Family Picnic: I encourage all families to attend this event on Friday 20th February. This event is coordinated by the Christ the King School P&F Association. This occasion is a way of celebrating your child/ren’s first few weeks at the school, as well as an opportunity to meet other parents and welcome NEW families to the CtK School community. This will be held in the School Quad from 5:00pm. Once again, this promises to be a fabulous community gathering to start the school year.

Parking: This is at a premium. There are no more car park spaces available so please be patient and just remember to drive safely as children are walking through the car park. Please DO NOT park on people’s verges across the road from the Early Childhood Centre Car Park on Caldwell Street. Homeowners have complained to the school and the Ranger will be patrolling the area. I will continue to think about practical ways to support parents in being able to access the school grounds safely. Everyone please be patient and remember child safety first.

From My Readings…

7 Ways to Make a Sensational Start to the School Year

A new school year means a fresh start for students. Regardless of your child’s performance last year, they start school with a clean slate. A break offers students the chance to begin new habits and adopt new behaviours. Here are seven ideas to help you make the most of the fresh start and make this year your child’s best year ever year at school

  1. Commit to your child going to school every day on time
One of the most important things you can do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets there on time. Kids spend more time asleep than at school, so we need to maximise every day to get full value.
  2. Help kids start each day well
A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and some words of encouragement from you will help set a positive tone for a day of learning. This may mean that you adjust your morning routine so that kids have plenty of time to get up, eat and get ready for the day. Consider taking a leaf out of the book of a friend of mine who gets her children to make their beds each morning which sets the tone for a productive day ahead.
  3. Establish work & study habits
The most successful students are those that develop regular study habits that suit their lifestyle, their study style and their school’s expectations. Find out the work expectations from your child’s or young person’s school and help them establish a work routine that matches their personality, lifestyle and family style. Be flexible here as one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to study routines.
  4. Make sure your child gets enough sleep
I encourage you to make a big focus as this year as many children and young people are sleep-deprived, which impacts on their well-being and their learning. A good night’s sleep consolidates learning, as well as assisting future learning. Children need between 10-12 hours of sleep each day, while teens need a minimum of nine hours. Help kids get sufficient sleep by having a regular bed-time and get-up time each day. Have 45-minute wind-down time each night, and remove screens and mobile phones from bedrooms.
  5. Get your kids outside more for good physical and mental health
Kids today get less exercise than those of past generations, which is an impediment to learning and mental health. Health professionals recommend a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise per day for kids of all ages. Encourage kids to play sport; promote free and active play and look for ways to make moving part of their daily lives. Consider increasing your child’s green time and decreasing screen time for good physical and mental health.
  6. Focus on being friendly
Schools are very social places requiring kids to negotiate many different social situations each day. Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be involved in plenty of activities and to be social risk-takers. Some kids close down their friendship opportunities through self-centredness, poor attitude and unwillingness to take social risks.
  7. Develop self-help skills
Successful students are often well-organised, self-directed and self-motivated. You can foster organisational skills and self-direction by developing simple, age-appropriate self-help skills related to their every day lives. Also use visual parenting techniques to aid organisation and encourage independence. Such skills as making lunches, packing school bags, and organising after school schedules can be great lessons that impact on how kids perform at school.

At the start of the school year kids are likely to adopt changes than at any other time. Make the most of the opportunity by focusing on two or three areas to really target and you’ll find that the rest may well fall into place.

There are ‘great things’ happening in our school due to the efforts of so many people; seek to be one of those people in the coming week!

Keep smiling and remember it takes all of us!

Messages from the Assistant Principal – Mrs Sabrina Reardon

Welcome Back to Term 1

It has been wonderful to welcome all students and staff back to Christ the King School for the 2026 academic year. There was a great sense of excitement as new students joined our community and returning students settled back into familiar routines. Inclusivity remains a strong focus at CtK, and this was evident throughout the first weeks of the school year.

Our staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure classrooms were well prepared for the year ahead. Learning spaces are clean, bright and inviting, and we thank our dedicated staff for their commitment and preparation.

We look forward to creating and sharing many special moments with you throughout the year. Thank you for your support in ensuring your child was organised and well prepared for the first day of school, it is very much appreciated.

It has been lovely walking into classrooms each morning and seeing our students engaged and happy in their learning environment. This is what some of our children loved about their first few weeks at CtK:

Oliver A – Year 6: I just love everything about our school and about Year 6!

Georgia B – Year 6: I loved meeting my new teacher and getting to know everyone a little bit more!

Sophie S – Year 5: I loved seeing all my friends again and meeting my new teacher!

Ava C – Year 5: I liked setting up everything in our classroom and I loved meeting my new teacher!

Josh P – Year 5: I liked meeting new friends and Mrs Wright!

Archie – Year 1 student: I loved going to the oval and playing handball at recess and lunch!

2026 Parent Information Evening

Our Parent Information Evening was a great success. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend and meet with classroom teachers.

We encourage families to contact teachers with any concerns or queries, acknowledging that staff will respond within 48 hours. We appreciate your support in respecting family time and ask that communication be made during the school day wherever possible.

Sacrament Commitment Masses (compulsory)

Students intending to enrol in the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation in 2026 are required to attend one of the Parish Commitment Masses at Christ the King Church, as a sign of their commitment. During the Mass, students will be invited to stand and pledge their commitment to the Sacrament.

Parish Mass times:

  • Saturday 14 March at 6pm
  • Sunday 15 March at 10am

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Please note:

  1. Students enrolling in their First Holy Communion must have already received the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  2. Students enrolling in Confirmation must have already received both the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

NAPLAN 2026

NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 each year. NAPLAN information for parents and carers of students in Years 3 and 5 will be sent home shortly. Please check your child’s school bag. Further information about NAPLAN can be found at:

Whole School Crunch and Sip

Crunch and Sip is a nutrition program that encourages students to eat more fruit and vegetables and drink water during the school day. All students are required to bring a small container of crunchy fruit or vegetables each day for their Crunch and Sip break. Teachers have advised classes of their scheduled Crunch and Sip time. This daily break supports student health, concentration and learning. Helpful guides for packing Crunch and Sip and healthy lunchboxes can be found at:
https://www.crunchandsip.com.au/parents/how-to-participate

School Attendance

Regular attendance plays a vital role in student engagement and academic success. We ask families to set clear expectations around daily attendance and establish morning routines that support punctual arrival. Please notify the school of any absences before 9am so your child can be accounted for. Please do not wait for a message from the school. Absences can be reported to the school by:

  • Phoning the school on: 9487 9900
  • Logging the absence, via the school website
  • Emailing; admin@ctk.wa.edu.au

Whilst holidays during school term is not encouraged, if you have planned absences of five days or more, an Extended Absence Form must be completed and approved by the Principal, prior to the absence. This form is available here:

Arrival and Dismissal – Years 1 to 6

Supervision for students in Years 1 to 6 begins at 8.10am in the quadrangle. Classroom doors open at 8.28am, with teaching and learning commencing at 8:40am. Students should not arrive before 8.10am unless attending before-school care or a scheduled co-curricular activity. Classes conclude at 2.45pm for our Pre-Kindy and Kindergarten students and 3pm for PP-6. Please ensure your child knows their daily travel arrangements and that they are collected promptly. Any changes to dismissal arrangements should be communicated to the front office during the day. We ask families to respect staff time before and after school, as this is when staff are engaged in preparation, meetings and administration. Appointments should always be made where necessary. The safety, health and wellbeing of all students remains our highest priority.

Early Childhood Car Park & Staff Car Park

The Early Childhood Car Park is reserved for families of children in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Pre-Primary, as well as those with special permission. Please ensure you have a ECE carpark permit left on your dashboard of your car. Children in these year levels must be collected directly from their classrooms. A reminder to please not park in our staff car park. This is allocated to staff only and bays are limited. Thank you for your cooperation.

House Prayer Card Competition

Earlier this year, students from Years 3-6 took part in our House Prayer Card Competition. As part of this project, students were invited to design an illustration that represented their House leaders and values. These wonderful artworks are now being transformed into special House Prayer Cards, which every student will receive at the end of the year. The heartfelt prayers that appear on the back of each card were written by our talented Year 6 students. We’re very excited to announce the following winners for their factions:

  • McTavish: Grace Kenworthy (Year 5)
  • Donovan: Mikyla Austin (Year 5)
  • DeVialar: Mia Bennett-Ng (Year 5)
  • Milne: Sean Lynch (Year 5)

This is a fantastic achievement! The winning designs will be printed and shared across our school community for everyone to enjoy and celebrate. The winners were officially announced following our CtK Mass. We can’t wait to share these beautiful cards with our school community, a lasting celebration of our faith, creativity, and the strong sense of community that makes our school so special.
